Some Master effects can be negated by PC abilities, but it seems that some bypass defenses that work on things like Master Assassinate.

Master is still commonly used instead of a different keyword for effects that are non-negotiably irresistible (i.e. snares that keep PCs from charging into real-life hazards, like Kaz’s release at Dawson).

This often provokes clarification that certain defenses can’t be used “because it’s a Master effect.”  I see that as potentially a harmful precedent- e.g. the Berserker’s Is That All not working on Master Assassinate (which has no real-world consequences), because using Is That All on a Master Shackle years ago could’ve led to someone getting hit with Radiant Discorporation in real life.

    1.  Is there an easier way to understand what defenses can be used against specific Master effects?
1b.  If not, have we considered adding more keywords to differentiate what can defend against what?

    West,

We appreciate the ideas put forth here. Safety is an important part of the game, after all.

The “Irresistible” prefix can be attached to effects that you mention and it has precedence within the rules (see the Resilience, Persistence, Bravery and Willpower skills).

But for most safety calls, such as Master Shackle for certain scenarios and scenes, the reason for the use of Master abilities are fairly obvious as safety measures.

Ultimately, there are already a vast amount of keywords in the game. Adding more is something that we constantly think about and consider except for the amount of explanation and mind space that such an addition would incur. This is why we build over the current ruleset instead of introducing new mechanics for the most part — the main exception to this, naturally, is when we introduce a new mechanic for one specific mod (such as Chain lightning).

Regardless, there is merit in your argument and depending on this final year of the game, we may see new keywords or new mechanics available to Player Characters.

More than fair There’s a lot to be said for mind space. Thank you!

    With that in mind:

    1. Is it safe to assume that defenses that work against Master Assassinate (e.g. Is That All) work against Master effects that aren’t safety-minded?

    2. How does the Intervene feat interact with such Master effects?

    1. Correct.
    2. Intervene is a Feat and therefore cannot be used to defend against a Master effect.
